Caviar is Chanel's grained calfskin, sold on its product pages as grained or grained shiny calfskin; lambskin is a smooth leather Chanel says it treats as little as possible. On the medium Classic 11.12 both are 15.5 × 25.5 × 6.5 cm and both list at $11,700 in the US. The difference is wear: Chanel names lambskin as sensitive to friction and colour transfer, and a 15 October 2026 resale snapshot had caviar flaps asking a median 77% of retail against 59% for lambskin.
Caviar and lambskin are the two leathers most Chanel flap buyers choose between, and Chanel makes the choice look smaller than it is. On the medium Classic 11.12 the two versions share a reference prefix, a published size of 15.5 × 25.5 × 6.5 cm and a US price of $11,700. What separates them is the surface: caviar is grained calfskin with a pebbled, raised texture, and lambskin is smooth and, in Chanel’s words, treated as little as possible. That one difference decides how the bag scuffs, how its quilting ages, how much care it needs and what it asks on the resale market. This page sets the two side by side using Chanel’s product pages and care notes first, and resale data second.

How the product page names each leather
The word caviar does not appear on Chanel’s tags. The house sells the leather as grained calfskin, and on current Classic Flaps as grained shiny calfskin: the dark red medium Classic 11.12 from the Fall Winter 2026 pre-collection, reference A01112-B25720-UB663, is listed as “Grained Shiny Calfskin & Gold-Tone Metal”. The smooth version is simply “Lambskin”, as on the black medium Classic 11.12, reference A01112-Y01295-94305. The middle block of the reference tracks the material on the long-running black references: the lambskin black carries Y01295, while the black grained calfskin medium has long been sold as A01112 Y01864 C3906 and the small as A01113 Y01864 C3906. Seasonal colours can use a different middle block, as the dark red B25720 shows, so read the material line on the page rather than decoding it from the number alone.

What the grain does to scuffs and corners
The pebble texture is the whole practical argument for caviar. A raised grain breaks up light, so a fine scratch lands across dozens of small peaks rather than on one flat plane, and it is far harder to see. Fashionphile’s guide to Chanel textiles describes caviar as highly durable and stiff, notes that Chanel introduced it in the 1990s, and lists it on the Double Flap, the Coco Handle and the Wallet on Chain, the shapes that see the most daily handling. Lambskin has no such cover. Chanel’s CHANEL & moi care notes name lambskin, alongside metallic leather and fabrics such as jersey and tweed, as sensitive to repeated friction that can cause premature wear, especially on the corners and edges. Corners are where a flap bag rubs against a hip, a car seat and a table, so that is where the two leathers part company first.
Why lambskin feels softer, in Chanel’s own words
Chanel gives the reason lambskin behaves as it does. Its care notes say the house’s lambskin leathers are treated as little as possible to preserve their natural suppleness and their soft texture. Less finishing is what makes the leather feel buttery in the hand and what leaves the surface more open to marks, moisture and dye. Chanel’s advice follows from that: to reduce the look of light marks on lambskin, rub the leather gently in small circular movements. The same treatment that makes lambskin the more tactile choice makes it the one that records its history. Chanel’s care page closes on the same idea, inviting owners to appreciate the natural patina that develops on a bag day after day.

Colour transfer: the light-colour and denim problem
Colour is where lambskin needs the most thought. Chanel lists lambskin, patent leather, suede, nubuck and fabrics such as jersey and tweed as particularly sensitive to colour transfer, and advises keeping light-coloured leather away from dark clothing, naming denim specifically. The warning runs both ways: a dark leather can also stain a pale coat. In practice a white, beige or pastel lambskin flap carried against dark jeans is the highest-risk combination in the Chanel range. A black caviar flap against the same jeans is the lowest. If a light colour is the point of the purchase, caviar is the easier leather to keep clean, and if lambskin is the point, a dark colour removes most of the transfer risk.
Shape over time: stiff grain against soft quilting
The published dimensions are identical, but the two leathers hold them differently. Caviar is stiff, which keeps the flap’s outline square and the quilting raised for years. Lambskin quilting is softer from the start, and owners report that its puffiness can flatten with use, so a heavily carried lambskin bag can look slimmer than a caviar bag of the same size. Chanel’s care page adds a point that applies to both: its leathers are checked for tensile strength and tension but are still delicate products, so avoid overfilling a bag to preserve its shape. Overfilling stresses the flap more than the body, and a flap that no longer sits flat is the first visible sign on either leather.
Water, light and storage: what Chanel says to do
Chanel’s bag care instructions are short and apply to both leathers. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, artificial light and humidity. If the bag gets wet, dab the area dry with an absorbent, non-pilling cloth. Use a soft cloth and avoid care products that may change the finish. Store the bag upright in its original pouch, ideally wrapped in tissue, with the chain or strap wrapped in tissue and placed inside so it does not mark the leather. Chanel notes that suede and nubuck are particularly sensitive to chain marks, and the advice matters more for lambskin than caviar because a flat smooth surface shows an imprint that grain would hide. For repairs and restoration the house points to its CHANEL & moi service.
The resale gap, and how much of it is condition
Leather shows up clearly in pre-owned asking prices. On 15 October 2026 Phia recorded 33 asking prices for pre-owned medium Classic Double Flaps: 12 at Rebag, 11 at The RealReal and 10 at Fashionphile. Against the boutique tag on that day the median ask was 68% of retail. Split by leather, caviar asked a median 77% across 13 listings and lambskin 59% across 10. Condition moved the number by a similar margin: bags graded Excellent asked a median 74% across 14 listings, and Very Good bags 58% across 13. Because lambskin shows wear sooner, part of the leather gap is likely a condition gap in disguise. These are one-day asking prices, not completed sales, and they are a different measure from Rebag’s Clair report, which Phia cites as putting Chanel’s value retention at 75% in 2021 and 92% in 2024.
| Group, medium Classic Double Flap | Listings | Median asking price, share of retail |
|---|---|---|
| All listings | 33 | 68% |
| Caviar | 13 | 77% |
| Lambskin | 10 | 59% |
| Graded Excellent | 14 | 74% |
| Graded Very Good | 13 | 58% |
Choosing between them in four questions
The decision comes down to how the bag will be used. Will it be carried most days, in the rain, on public transport or against a laptop bag? Choose caviar. Is the colour light, and will it be worn with denim? Choose caviar, or a darker lambskin. Is the bag for evenings, carried occasionally, and is a soft hand the reason for buying it? Lambskin is the leather Chanel built the original quilted look around and the one that rewards that use. Is resale part of the plan? The October 2026 snapshot favoured caviar by 18 points of retail, though a well-kept lambskin bag in Excellent condition closes much of that gap. Then confirm the material line on the product page or the listing, because the word on the page, not the nickname, is what identifies the leather.

Frequently asked questions about Chanel caviar and lambskin
- Is Chanel caviar leather the same as calfskin?
- Yes. Caviar is the nickname; Chanel's own product pages call the leather grained calfskin or, on current pieces, grained shiny calfskin. The medium Classic 11.12 in dark red, reference A01112-B25720-UB663, is listed as Grained Shiny Calfskin & Gold-Tone Metal. Not every Chanel calfskin is caviar: smooth calfskin and the aged calfskin used on the Reissue 2.55 are separate finishes with their own names on the tag.
- Is caviar or lambskin more expensive at Chanel?
- On the medium Classic Flap they are priced the same. In October 2026 Chanel's US site listed the black lambskin Classic 11.12, reference A01112-Y01295-94305, at $11,700 and the dark red grained shiny calfskin version at $11,700. The leather changes how the bag ages and how it asks on the resale market, not the boutique tag for this model.
- Does Chanel lambskin scratch easily?
- It marks more readily than caviar, and Chanel says so in its own care notes. The house lists lambskin among the materials sensitive to repeated friction, especially at corners and edges, and among those sensitive to colour transfer. It also explains why: its lambskins are treated as little as possible to keep their suppleness. Chanel suggests rubbing light surface marks on lambskin with small circular movements.
- Which holds value better, Chanel caviar or lambskin?
- In the one dated snapshot we found, caviar. Phia recorded 33 asking prices for pre-owned medium Classic Double Flaps at Rebag, The RealReal and Fashionphile on 15 October 2026. Caviar listings asked a median 77% of retail across 13 bags and lambskin 59% across 10. These are asking prices on one day, not completed sales, and condition grade moved the number almost as much as leather did.
- Are a caviar and a lambskin Classic Flap the same size?
- Chanel publishes the same dimensions for both. The medium Classic 11.12 is 15.5 × 25.5 × 6.5 cm, 6.1 × 10 × 2.6 inches, in lambskin and in grained shiny calfskin. In use they can look different: caviar is stiffer and holds a squarer outline, while lambskin quilting can soften and flatten, so a well-used lambskin bag may look slimmer at the same published size.
- How do you clean a Chanel lambskin bag that gets wet?
- Chanel's instruction is to dab the area dry with an absorbent, non-pilling cloth and avoid care products that might change the finish. It also warns against prolonged exposure to light and moisture for any of its leathers. Let the bag dry at room temperature rather than with heat. For stains or deep marks, Chanel's own repair service, CHANEL & moi, is the route the house points to.
