Why the number on a Moncler tag is not enough on its own

Moncler uses one numbering system across men’s and women’s outerwear, and both lines start at 00, which is where most sizing mistakes begin. The number is not a universal size; it is a position in the line. Women’s size 1 is Italian 42, German 36, French 38, a UK 10 and a US small. Men’s size 1 is Italian 46, German 46, French 42, a UK 36 and a US small. Two people can both say they wear a Moncler 1 and be describing garments four Italian sizes apart. The split is widest at the lowest step of each range, where a women’s 00 is an Italian 38 and a men’s 00 is an Italian 42. Moncler’s own guide describes the system as a universal sizing system built to provide one reference across countries, and it prints the same numbers for both collections, so which collection a piece belongs to has to be settled before the number means anything.

The practical consequence is that a listing, a screenshot or a tag showing only “1” or “2” is incomplete. What you want alongside it is the collection, and ideally the Italian size, because that is the only figure that is stable across Moncler’s own tables and the retailer charts that repeat them. When you ask about a specific piece, the number plus the model name is enough for anyone holding the garment to check it against the chart.

Moncler women’s jacket sizes, number by number

The women’s chart is the shorter of the two. Moncler lists women’s outerwear in seven steps from 00 to 5, with an Italian run from 38 to 50 for the sizes the retailers republish, and it adds a reference height for the wearer at each step — 166 cm at 00 rising to 175 cm at 4 and 5.

Two things about this table are worth noticing. The first is that the Japanese and Korean columns that appear in Moncler’s chart do not follow the same offset: a women’s size 1 is a JP 9 and a KR 84-160, which is why a piece sourced from an Asian market can carry the same number with a very different looking label. The second is that the top of the women’s range is one of the places where Moncler’s own tables disagree — more on that below.

Moncler men’s jacket sizes run from 00 to 7

The men’s range is longer, reaching size 7, and it starts two Italian sizes higher than the women’s at the same number. The reference heights run from 168 cm at 00 to 185 cm at 6 and 7.

Notice that the men’s UK column tracks chest size in inches: a men’s size 1 is a UK 36, size 2 is a UK 38, and so on. That makes the men’s chart unusually easy to check against a jacket you already own, because the UK figure and the chest measurement are the same number. On the women’s side the UK column is a dress size instead, so the two collections cannot be compared through that column at all.

The half-chest column, and why Moncler’s chart reads half the size

Moncler prints its outerwear measurements as half measurements. Its columns are headed half chest and half waist, and a men’s size 1 shows 46 cm, a women’s size 1 shows 42 cm. Those figures are half widths, not circumferences, and it is why a Moncler chart compared against a body measurement published elsewhere looks like it is describing a child’s jacket. Doubling Moncler’s numbers produces figures you can line up against the body chests retailers publish: men’s sizes 1, 2 and 3 double to 92, 96 and 100 cm, which are exactly the body chests those charts give for S, M and L. The reconciliation is not perfect everywhere. At the small and large ends of the range the doubled figure comes out between two and eight centimetres short, so the half-chest column is a cross-check, not a garment measurement, and it should never replace the Italian size.

One further oddity is worth knowing before you use that column. In Moncler’s outerwear tables the half-chest figures run 38, 42, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 58 and 62 cm for men’s 00 to 7 — the same run of numbers as the Italian sizes for those rows. That coincidence is a good reason to read the column heading rather than assume the 46 against a size 1 is a full chest.

Where Moncler’s own charts disagree with each other

Two tables in Moncler’s guide do not give identical conversions, and the disagreement sits at the ends of each range. For men, the table headed outerwear puts size 00 at Italian 38 and size 0 at Italian 42; the topwear table puts 00 at Italian 42 and 0 at Italian 44. For women, the outerwear table puts size 5 at Italian 52, while the topwear table and the retailer charts put it at Italian 50. From men’s size 1 upward the two tables agree.

The figures in the tables above follow the mapping that Moncler’s topwear table and the retailer charts share, because that is the version a listing, a product page or a conversation about a specific jacket will almost always be using. If you are working from an older chart or a receipt that quotes the other set of numbers, the difference at 00 and at 5 explains most of the confusion.

Maya, Bady and Ghany carry the number differently

The number fixes the body, but the model decides how much of it the jacket covers, and the names that come up most often in the short down range are Maya, Bady and Ghany. The Maya is the short hooded down jacket with a straight, waist-length cut and a detachable hood; it has been in the line since 2009 and is based on the Bazille zip-up design from 1998, which is why it is the silhouette most people picture. The Bady is the cropped style — shorter through the body, usually described with a tighter, sportier line to the hem than the Maya. The Ghany is a different garment altogether: a down gilet or vest, sleeveless, so the same number buys less garment. These three sit at different lengths rather than different widths, which means a size 2 in a Ghany and a size 2 in a Maya cover very different amounts of the same body.

Two more distinctions matter when you are reading a listing. The Maya 70 is not a size and not a colourway — it is the 70th-anniversary version released in 2022 in Moncler’s washed nylon lux laqué, and it is a distinct piece from the standard Maya even though both are labelled with the same number. And some short jackets in the range mix materials, with a glossy quilted front and matte knit sleeves, which changes how the same size sits because a knit sleeve follows the arm while a quilted one stands off it.

What is inside, and why that decides your size

A Moncler jacket is sized for a body, not for the garment, and the fill is the reason. Moncler’s down is certified under its own protocol: the Down Integrity System and Traceability programme, in place since 2015, requires down that comes from farmed geese as a by-product of the food chain, forbids live-plucking and force-feeding, and is checked by independent audits along the supply chain. Retailers publishing the specification of a Maya list the fill as 90% goose down and 10% feathers, and the shell as quilted nylon laqué.

Loft also means volume, so a jacket sitting correctly on the chart can still feel tight over a heavy sweater and feel generous over a shirt. Nylon laqué, the glossy shell that came out of Moncler’s ski lines, is water-repellent rather than waterproof, and the finish changes the drape: a glossy shell hangs with a little more body than the matte versions of the same jacket.

Measuring yourself for a Moncler number

Take three measurements and you can pick a number without guessing. Measure your chest or bust around the fullest point, your waist at the narrowest point, and your height, because Moncler’s chart gives a reference height for every size and it is often the fastest way to rule out a step at either end. Then match against the table for the collection the jacket belongs to, and use the doubled half-chest figure only as a sanity check.

Two situations need a judgement call rather than a conversion. If you are between two steps, the jacket’s intended layering matters: Moncler’s short down jackets are cut with room for a sweater underneath, and people who want a close fit routinely take one size down, so a piece you intend to wear over knitwear should go up rather than down. If you are buying from a listing that only shows the number with no collection, ask for the Italian size as well — that single figure removes the men’s and women’s ambiguity entirely, and it is printed inside the garment on the size label.

Photos settle the finish and the model, not the number

A photo answers the questions a chart cannot, and it does so quickly if the shot is taken right. A stand-away shot of the whole jacket shows the cut — short and boxy against long and belted — and the amount of loft through the body. A close shot of the sleeve shows the felt badge and the pocket beside it, and whether the sleeve is quilted nylon or knit. A shot of the open front shows the inside label, where the size and the Italian equivalent sit together. A shot under light shows whether the shell is glossy laqué or matte.

What no photo settles is how a number will feel on you. Photographs are taken on a hanger, on a mannequin or on one wearer, and they cannot tell you whether a size 2 will close comfortably over a hoodie, how the hem drawstring behaves on your frame, or whether you would have preferred the cropped Bady line. Those answers come from your own chest and height measurements against the chart, which is why the measurement is worth taking before you ask about a size.

What to send when you ask about a size

Send four things and the answer is immediate: the collection (women’s or men’s), the number as it appears on the label, your chest or bust measurement in centimetres, and your height. Add the model name if the listing shows one — Maya, Bady, Ghany, or a Moncler Grenoble or Genius piece — because that tells the other side which cut the number is attached to. It also helps to know that Moncler states a fit on the product page itself, such as regular or slim, and quotes the measurements of the wearer in its product photography; where those details are available they settle the layering question faster than the size chart alone. If the listing shows an Italian size instead of a number, send that too; it is the one figure that survives every chart in circulation.
