Balenciaga jackets carry a number from 1 to 5, a letter from XXS to XXL, or an Italian number such as 46, and the house prints all three across its own pieces. The charts published for the 1-to-5 range do not agree: one reads size 3 as a large, another reads it as a medium, and two height tables place size 3 ten centimetres apart. Balenciaga itself publishes no numbered table, only a fit word, the model's height and the size that model is wearing.
A Balenciaga jacket can carry a number from 1 to 5, a letter from XXS to XXL, or an Italian number such as 46 — and the same house prints all three. The charts published for the 1-to-5 range do not agree: one reads size 3 as a large, another reads it as a medium, and two height tables place size 3 ten centimetres apart.
Balenciaga’s own product pages never print a numbered size chart. What they print under Size and Fit is a fit word, the model’s height and the size that model is wearing. Across the jackets checked for this guide, that line reads Regular fit on one denim jacket with a 178 cm model in a size S, Large fit on a tailored jacket with a 184 cm model in a size 46, Normal fit on a single-breasted jacket with a 188 cm model in a size 46, and Oversize fit on a hooded zip-up with a 178 cm model in a French size 36. One house, four fit words, three kinds of size label, and no published table for the 1-to-5 numbers that appear on the track jackets it sells. So the number on a tag has to be read against a retail chart instead, and those charts were written by different people from different fitting data, which is why they contradict each other on the same digit.
Everything below comes from pages that print figures: the Size and Fit block on Balenciaga’s own jacket listings, the letter and height charts published by four retailers and marketplaces, and resale listings that name a letter equivalent for a numbered tag. All of them were checked on 5 October 2026, and none of them is a statement about a particular garment.
Three size languages on one house’s jackets
The first thing to establish is that a Balenciaga jacket is not one labelling system. The house’s own listings use at least three, and which one you meet depends on the piece rather than on your preference. Tailored jackets are offered in Italian numbers, so the description of a double-breasted piece names a size such as 46. Casual and technical jackets are offered in letters, so the same brand’s track jacket names a size such as S. At least one hooded piece is described in French numbers, where a size 36 appears beside the fit word. The house’s own filter for the jackets category also puts two ladders next to each other: an Italian run from 32 to 56 and the letter run from XXS to XXL. No page converts between the three, and the 1-to-5 labels that appear on the numbered track jackets do not appear in the filter at all.
| Jacket on balenciaga.com | Fit word printed | Model | Size shown on the model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denim jacket, regular fit | Regular fit | 178 cm / 5’10” | size S |
| Too far tailored jacket | Large fit | 184 cm / 6’0” | size 46 |
| Single-breasted normal fit jacket | Normal fit | 188 cm / 6’2” | size 46 |
| Single-breasted slim fit jacket | Slim fit | 189 cm / 6’2” | size 46 |
| Balenciaga back zip-up jacket | Oversize fit | 178 cm / 5’10” | French size 36 |
| Track jacket, collaboration drop | Large fit | 178 cm / 5’10” | size S |
The tailored pieces are labelled in Italian numbers, the casual and technical pieces in letters, and one in French numbers. Nothing on those pages says how a letter relates to an Italian number, and nothing says what a 1-to-5 tag means. Several of the oversized pieces carry a standing sentence as well: designed to be worn as an oversized or very loose fit, with the house recommending sizing down for a regular fit.
The 1 to 5 numbering, read two ways
The numbered labels sit mostly on the track jackets, and the number is not a measurement of any kind — it is not a chest circumference, not a back length and not a shoulder width, so it cannot be compared with a tape measure directly. Two families of chart exist for it, and they are built on completely different ideas about what the digit names. One family treats the number as a body height band, so the figure describes the wearer’s overall stature. The other treats it as a letter equivalent, so the figure describes a place in a size run. Both families are published in the ordinary course of selling these jackets, neither says which garment or which body it was written for, and the two height tables do not agree with each other at any single step in the range.
The height reading, and the 10 cm gap inside it
Two sources treat the number as a height. They agree on the shape of the idea and disagree on every value.
| Label | Reading A (marketplace size note) | Reading B (two retailer tables) |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 155 cm / 5’1” | 165 cm |
| 1 | 160 cm / 5’3” | 170 cm |
| 2 | 165 cm / 5’5” | 175 cm |
| 3 | 170 cm / 5’7” | 180 cm |
| 4 | 180 cm / 5’11” | 185 cm |
| 5 | 185 cm / 6’0” | 190 cm |
Read the two columns together and a 178 cm buyer is a 4 under one table and a 2 under the other. Both tables are published in the ordinary course of selling these jackets, and neither carries a note explaining whose measurement it is describing. The useful part of the height idea is the direction it points: if the number is a height band, then it is not a chest and it will not change with how broadly you are built.
The letter reading, one whole size apart
The second family converts the number to a letter, and here the two published versions are offset by a full step.
| Label | Reading A (retailer table) | Reading B (marketplace size note) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | XXS, XS and S all appear under 1 | XS |
| 2 | M | S |
| 3 | L | M |
| 4 | XL | L |
| 5 | XXL | XL |
The two columns disagree on the single most common question asked about these jackets: whether a 3 is a large or a medium. The offset is not a rounding difference, it is a whole garment size, and it repeats at every step. Resale listings follow both habits — one major marketplace listing for a tailored jacket names size 3 with the note that it is equivalent to an international large, and another lists a size 3 the same way, while a marketplace selling a 1-to-5 track jacket prints the second reading, where 3 is a medium.
Note also what reading A does with label 1: three letter sizes collapse onto one digit. That is the clearest sign that the number and the letter are not the same kind of quantity, and it means a chart that offers a one-to-one conversion for labels 2 to 5 still cannot do it for label 1.
Two letters that share a row and nothing else
Once the number is converted to a letter, the letter has to be converted again, and the men’s and women’s tables inside Balenciaga’s own published charts use the same letters for different bodies.
| Letter | Men’s chart (US / FR / chest) | Women’s chart (US / FR / bust) |
|---|---|---|
| XXS | US 32 / FR 42 / 90 cm chest | US 0 / FR 32 / 78 cm bust |
| XS | US 34 / FR 44 / 95 cm chest | US 2 / FR 34 / 80 cm bust |
| S | US 36 / FR 46 / 100 cm chest | US 4 / FR 36 / 84 cm bust |
| M | US 38 / FR 48 / 105 cm chest | US 6 / FR 38 / 88 cm bust |
| L | US 40 / FR 50 / 108 cm chest | US 8 / FR 40 / 92 cm bust |
| XL | US 42 / FR 52 / 112 cm chest | US 10 / FR 42 / 96 cm bust |
| XXL | US 44 / FR 54 / 116 cm chest | US 12 / FR 44 / 100 cm bust |
The men’s column runs on a 32-to-44 American scale and the women’s on a 0-to-12 scale, so a men’s S and a women’s S are six American sizes apart and 16 cm apart at the chest, 100 cm against 84 cm. Both columns also use the same French range of numbers while the bodies behind them differ, so a French 42 is the men’s XXS and the women’s XL at the same time. The letters are then reused a third time by the two readings of the 1-to-5 labels, which means a quoted size such as a 3 arrives with three possible meanings before any measurement has been mentioned. If a size is quoted without saying which chart it came from, the letter on its own does not identify a quantity.
Where the men’s rows stop matching each other
The men’s figure rows themselves are not stable between sources, at the chest in particular.
| Letter | Men’s chest (source A) | Men’s chest (source B) | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| XXS | 90 cm | 84 cm | 6 cm |
| XS | 95 cm | 88 cm | 7 cm |
| S | 100 cm | 92 cm | 8 cm |
| M | 105 cm | 96 cm | 9 cm |
| L | 108 cm | 100 cm | 8 cm |
| XL | 112 cm | 104 cm | 8 cm |
| XXL | 116 cm | 108 cm | 8 cm |
The two rows also move differently. One climbs in uneven steps, adding 5 cm, 5 cm, 5 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm and 4 cm. The other adds a flat 4 cm at every step. A regular 4 cm progression is a circumference ladder; the uneven one is closer to a garment or a panel measurement. Whichever reading is right, a buyer who measures 100 cm across the chest is a size S on one table and an L on the other, and the difference is not the buyer’s.
What the fit words mean beside a number
The fit word is the only size signal Balenciaga publishes per style, and it does more work than any of the third-party tables. Across the jackets checked, the house uses Regular fit, Normal fit, Slim fit, Large fit and Oversize fit, and several oversized pieces carry the same standing sentence: the piece is designed to be worn as an oversized or very loose fit, and the house recommends sizing down for a regular fit. A marketplace listing for a comparable oversized cut gives the opposite instruction, telling buyers to take their usual size. Both sentences are attached to garments described as loose. For a buyer who wants the intended silhouette, the standing sentence is the more specific of the two, because it names the outcome, a regular fit, that sizing down is meant to produce. For a buyer who wants the loose cut exactly as shown, taking a usual size and letting the cut do the work is the same reasoning read backwards.
The practical consequence is that a size question on these jackets has two halves, and only one of them is about the number. The number chooses the place in the run; the fit word chooses how much room that place brings with it. A Large fit jacket in a size 3 and a Slim fit jacket in a size 3 are not the same quantity of garment, and the photography on a product page will not separate them, because both are shot flat against the same background.
What the photographs settle, and what they cannot

The photographs above answer the questions a seller works from: which line a piece belongs to, what the collar and closure are, whether the hem is ribbed or straight, and how the body is finished. They carry no length and no number. A jacket photographed next to a tape measure does, and that is the image to ask for when the number is the open question.
Six figures to send when you ask about a jacket size
A size question with numbers attached can be answered in one reply. These six come from a jacket that already fits and a tape on a flat surface.
- Your own chest circumference, measured over a shirt at the fullest point, because one of the published men’s rows is built on that figure.
- Your height in centimetres, because two of the published readings for the 1-to-5 labels treat the number as a height band rather than a chest.
- Shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back of a jacket you already wear the way you want this one to sit.
- Chest, measured pit to pit on that same jacket and doubled, which is the figure a chart prints as chest size.
- Centre-back length, from the collar seam to the hem, which decides where the jacket ends.
- Sleeve, from the shoulder seam to the cuff edge, taken the same way the seller takes it.
Add the piece’s own reference and the fit word printed beside it, and the size question is answerable without a conversion chart at all. If the tag number is the only information available, quote the number and the letters or Italian figure printed next to it, because on these jackets the digits alone do not identify a quantity.
Browse the Clothes Catalog or send the label number, the fit word and your chest measurement on WhatsApp. The published figures quoted above are reference data gathered for research and checked on 5 October 2026, not a statement about any particular garment. For the same question in another house, the Gucci hoodie sizing guide works through a letter grid with holes in it, the Moncler jacket size guide follows one number across two garments, the Louis Vuitton jacket sizing guide shows what happens when measurements are published for one size only, the Burberry trench coat size guide covers three lengths under one model name, the belt size guide covers strap sizing, and the catalog inquiry guide lists the measurements to send when a size question turns into an order.

Frequent questions about Balenciaga jacket sizes
- What does size 3 mean on a Balenciaga jacket?
- It depends which chart you read, and both readings are in print. One retailer table maps label 3 to a large and label 2 to a medium; a second maps label 3 to a medium and label 4 to a large. A third and fourth reading treat the number as a body height, so size 3 sits at either 170 cm or 180 cm depending on the table. The letters and the Italian numbers printed on the same jackets are the only anchors the house itself publishes.
- Do Balenciaga jackets run big?
- Balenciaga's own jacket pages answer this per style rather than once. Several carry a standing note that the piece is designed to be worn as an oversized or very loose fit and that the house recommends sizing down for a regular fit. The same jackets are shown on models between 178 cm and 189 cm, wearing a letter, an Italian number or a French number depending on the item. A marketplace selling one of the same jackets tells buyers to take their usual size, which is the opposite instruction.
- What is a Balenciaga size 46 in a jacket?
- The 46 printed on Balenciaga's tailored jackets is the Italian number, and it is the smallest row of the house's own men's letter chart, not the middle of it. Conventional Italian tailoring puts a 46 around a 36 inch chest, so reading it that way lands about a size and a half above where Balenciaga's own men's row places it. The jackets carrying 46 are shown on models between 184 cm and 189 cm.
- Is a Balenciaga jacket size the same as a Balenciaga shoe size?
- No, and the two scales overlap on the same digits. Balenciaga shoes run on European numbers from 34 to 48. Jackets use either letters, Italian numbers, or the 1-to-5 scale, and shoe searches for the digit 3 return 36, 37, 38 and 39 because the shoe ladder owns that neighbourhood. A tag reading 3 on clothing and a tag reading 3 on a shoe are not related quantities.
- Why do Balenciaga size charts disagree with each other?
- Because the house publishes none for the 1-to-5 labels, so every chart in circulation was written by a retailer or marketplace from its own fitting data. The result is a 10 cm gap between the two height readings, a one-size gap between the two letter readings, and a 6 cm to 8 cm gap between two men's chest rows for the same letter. The only figures that trace back to Balenciaga are the fit word, the model height and the size worn.
- What should I measure before asking about a Balenciaga jacket size?
- Measure a jacket that already sits the way you want, laid flat: shoulder seam to shoulder seam, chest pit to pit and doubled, the centre-back length from collar seam to hem, and the sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff. Add your own chest circumference and your height in centimetres, because two of the published charts use height as the anchor. With those six numbers, plus the piece's own reference, a size question becomes a comparison rather than a guess.
