The drawstring changes the usable opening
A bucket body can look wide when laid flat and become much narrower when the drawstring gathers the neck around it. Measure the opening both fully loosened and as normally carried. The base width does not change, but the width at the top does, and that is the route through which a tablet, folder or large pouch enters. A soft calfskin body may also bulge between the straps when packed. Ask for photographs with the drawstring open and closed so the two states can be compared.
Depth explains why similar widths carry differently
A bucket shape can be tall but shallow, which limits how objects stack side by side. Published Chanel soft-body references range from the very tall CHANEL 22 at 42 cm high and about 8 cm deep to the compact 31 mini at 22 × 23 × 5 cm. A 5 cm depth is enough for a phone and card holder but not a compact sunglasses case laid flat. Compare the depth with the thickest object you intend to carry, then check whether the gathered top lets it through.
Material decides whether the shape holds
Suede and softer calfskin can relax under the weight of the contents, changing the bucket outline and the strap position. Quilted leather and firmer calfskin hold a more defined side panel. This distinction is visible in the catalogue set, where the bucket group includes smooth, quilted and suede surfaces. A soft body may look generous at the base but compress when empty, while a structured body can maintain the opening and make the same dimensions easier to use. Material does not change the advertised width; it changes how the bag behaves inside it.
The strap drop belongs to the exact configuration
Ask for the clear distance from the highest point of the strap to the top edge of the bag, with the bag hanging. Some straps double, some slide, and a drawstring chain may pass through the gathered neck differently when the bag is full. A drop measured while the bag is empty can shorten as the contents pull the body down. Record the drop both empty and filled if possible. This is more useful than quoting a total strap length that includes knot, hardware and ends.
A bucket-bag measurement sheet
Record base width, width at the loosened top, height from base to highest edge, depth at the base, strap drop and the minimum gathered-neck width. Add a front, side and top photograph, plus one image with a phone or wallet for scale. The larger catalogue photograph shows the surface and hardware; the tape and top view show whether the bag will open enough for your carry. That distinction is what prevents a beautifully shaped bucket bag from becoming an inconvenient one.
How bucket measurements compare with a tote
A bucket and a tote can share a width while behaving differently because the bucket’s side panels gather and its opening changes. Compare the flat base area and the loosened neck rather than only the outside maximum. A tall soft bucket may carry a folded scarf better than a shallow tote, while the tote can hold a flat folder more cleanly. The bag’s hardware and drawstring should be visible in the same photograph as the tape so the measurement can be tied to the correct construction.
