A Chanel belt size is a strap length in centimetres, and the tag often pairs it with inches: 85/34 means an 85 cm strap, because 85 cm is 33.5 inches. The number is not the full length. Resale measurements of size 85 CC belts read 39.5 to 40 inches end to end, roughly 100 to 102 cm, with a strap 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) wide and five holes spread over about 10 cm.
A Chanel belt size is a strap length in centimetres, and the tag usually adds the same length in inches: 85/34 is one 85 cm strap. Resale measurements of size 85 CC belts read 39.5 to 40 inches end to end, with a strap 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) wide.

Chanel sells its belts the way it sells much of its leather goods: by reference, by material and by colour, mostly through boutiques. The US product page for a black calfskin belt with gold-tone metal, reference A73463 Y11106 94305, prints the name, the material line “Calfskin & Gold-Tone Metal”, the colour and an invitation to find a boutique; the page for a black, burgundy and silver calfskin belt, reference A73462 Y10673 U0969, follows the same pattern. Neither page prints a strap width, a length ladder or a buckle measurement. The Fall-Winter 2026 belt category lists crocodile-embossed calfskin, suede calfskin and smooth calfskin belts under references such as AAC491, AAC406 and AAC405, plus a mixed-fibre fabric belt in the Coco Neige collection, again without size figures. So a buyer working out a Chanel belt size is reading tags, resale measurements and owners’ notes, not a house chart.
What the 85/34 tag says, and what 34 is not
The paired tag is arithmetic. Eighty-five centimetres divided by 2.54 is 33.46 inches, and the tag rounds it up to 34. The same rounding applied across the common women’s sizes gives 75/30, 80/32, 85/34 and 90/36; those inch figures are conversions worked here, not a printed Chanel chart, and the only pair confirmed on the listings read for this page is 85/34. The trap is that 34 looks like a trouser size. A belt tagged 85/34 does not fit a 34 inch waist: the strap has to cover the body, the thickness of the waistband and the buckle, and still close on a middle hole. A 34 inch waist is 86.4 cm, so it already sits beyond the middle hole of an 85 strap before any clothing is added. Treat the second figure as the strap in inches, and take the body measurement separately with a tape.
An 85 strap measures about 100 cm: where the extra 15 cm goes
The most useful measurements in circulation come from resale listings that print length and width for each piece. A 2018 CC reversible belt in black and burgundy, size 85, is listed at 39.5 inches long and 1.25 inches wide. A 2022 version of the same belt, tagged 85/34, reads 39.75 inches by 1.25 inches. A 2026 quilted CC chain belt in black, also tagged 85/34, reads 40 inches by 1.25 inches. Converted, those lengths are 100.3, 101.0 and 101.6 cm: an 85 strap is about 15 to 17 cm longer than its size when measured tip to tip. That allowance is the part of the strap that folds around the buckle bar, plus the tail that runs past the last hole and into the keeper. It is also why a tape laid along a Chanel belt end to end will always disagree with the tag, and why the measurement to ask a seller for is the distance from the buckle to the middle hole.

Five holes over 10 cm, and a middle hole near 84 cm
A consignment listing of a black quilted CC belt tagged 85/34 gives the hole positions directly: five holes between the 31 inch and the 35 inch marks. That is 78.7 to 88.9 cm, a span of about 10 cm with holes roughly 2.5 cm apart, and a middle hole at 33 inches, or 83.8 cm. The tag says 85. The middle hole sits within about 1.2 cm of the tag figure, which supports the working rule that a Chanel size is measured from the buckle to the centre hole rather than to the tip. In practice it means an 85 strap closes comfortably anywhere from about 79 to 89 cm around whatever it is worn over. A waist that measures 80 cm on the body and is worn over jeans will usually land on the middle or the fourth hole of an 85. A waist of 88 cm over a coat will be on the last hole, which is the signal to go up to a 90.
A 3.2 cm strap and a buckle more than twice its width
Every measured width read for this page is 1.25 inches, 3.2 cm, across the reversible belt and the quilted chain belt and across 2018, 2022 and 2026. That is wider than a typical 25 mm dress belt and narrower than a 35 to 40 mm jeans belt, and it decides which loops the strap will pass. The buckle is a different scale altogether. The consignment listing measures the quilted CC buckle at about 2.25 by 3 inches, 5.7 by 7.6 cm, so the interlocking Cs stand well over twice the height of the strap they close. A buckle that size sits in front of the waistband rather than threading through anything, and on a high-waisted skirt it can sit across the waistband seam. Before choosing a size, look at where the buckle will land on the garments you wear most, because a 7.6 cm buckle on a low-rise trouser and on a high-rise skirt reads as two different belts.
Chain belts: a full length, not a working hole
Chain belts follow a different logic. Many close with a hook that can catch any link, so the listed figure is the whole chain rather than a hole. A Spring-Summer 1993 multi-row chain belt in golden metal interlaced with black leather, listed on 1stDibs, is described only as 80 cm long. Chanel’s own Spring-Summer 2025 chain belt in metal, calfskin and diamanté, reference ABF712 B20545 U0897, is shown on the look it was styled with, and its page prints no length at all. For a chain belt, the useful numbers are the length end to end, the position of the hook, and whether any links hang free as a drop. A chain worn on the hip over a dress needs more length than the waist measurement suggests, and a chain worn at the waist over a knit needs less; measure on the body, over the garment, at the height where the chain will hang.
75, 80 or 85: what wearers report
Owners’ notes are not a chart, but they are consistent. On PurseForum, one wearer with a 27 inch waist says she chooses an 80 or an 85 depending on the design of the belt. Another, who wears 27 to 28 jeans, wears an 85 and advises a poster with a smaller frame to take an 80 over jeans and a 75 for wear at the natural waist over a dress. The same thread notes that 85 is the centimetre figure, about 33.4 inches. The pattern matches the measurements: a 27 inch waist is 68.6 cm, a strap worn at the hip over denim needs most of an 80 cm strap’s range, and a strap at the natural waist over thin fabric needs the 75. When a buyer gives a jeans size, the first question back is where the belt will sit; the second is what it will be worn over.
Four answers to get before a Chanel belt changes hands
Ask for a photograph of the interior stamp or tag, the distance in centimetres from the buckle to the middle hole, the hole count and the strap width at the holes. If the tag reads 85/34, the strap is an 85 and the 34 is the same length in inches. If the buckle-to-middle-hole distance comes back near 84 cm, the strap is behaving like the measured examples above. If there are five holes over about 10 cm, the working range is the size plus or minus 5 cm. And if the width reads 3.2 cm, the remaining question is the belt loop on the garment, which is usually settled with one more photograph and a tape measure. For a chain belt, swap the hole questions for the end-to-end length and the hook position.
Where the Chanel belt figures on this page were read
Every figure on this page is a reading of a published page checked on 27 October 2026. Inch-to-centimetre conversions and the rounded inch figures for 75, 80 and 90 are arithmetic worked here.

Frequently asked questions about Chanel belt sizes
- What does the number on a Chanel belt mean?
- It is a strap length in centimetres, read to the working holes rather than to the tip of the leather. A size 85 CC belt measured end to end on a resale listing reads 39.5 to 40 inches, about 100 to 102 cm, so roughly 15 cm of the strap is buckle allowance and tail. A consignment listing of an 85/34 quilted CC belt places its five holes between the 31 inch and 35 inch marks, which puts the middle hole at about 84 cm: within a centimetre and a half of the number on the tag.
- What does 85/34 mean on a Chanel belt?
- Both figures describe the same strap. 85 is the length in centimetres and 34 is that length in inches, rounded up: 85 divided by 2.54 is 33.5. The 34 is not a trouser size. A wearer with a 34 inch waist needs a strap closer to 95 cm, because the belt has to travel around the waistband as well as the body and still reach a middle hole. Reading the second number as a waist is the quickest way to buy a Chanel belt one or two sizes short.
- Is a Chanel belt size 80 or 85 better for a 27 inch waist?
- Wearers on PurseForum describe exactly this split. One with a 27 inch waist chooses 80 or 85 depending on the belt; another who wears 27 to 28 jeans wears an 85, and a third suggests 80 over jeans and 75 at the natural waist over a dress. The arithmetic agrees: a 27 inch waist is 68.6 cm, and a strap worn over denim at the hip needs several centimetres more than the body measurement. Decide where the belt will sit before choosing between the two.
- How wide is a Chanel CC belt?
- The resale measurements read for this page all give 1.25 inches, about 3.2 cm: a 2018 CC reversible belt in size 85, a 2022 version tagged 85/34, and a 2026 quilted CC chain belt tagged 85/34. Chanel's own product pages for its leather belts print the material and colour but no width, so a measured width from the seller is the figure to ask for. A 3.2 cm strap passes most jeans loops and can be tight on a narrow tailoring loop.
- Are Chanel chain belts sized the same way as leather belts?
- Not always. A leather strap is fixed by its holes, while many chain belts close on a hook that can catch any link, so the listed figure is the full chain rather than a working hole. A 1993 Spring-Summer multi-row chain belt interlaced with black leather, listed on 1stDibs, is described simply as 80 cm long. On a chain belt, ask for the end-to-end length and the hook position, and compare it with your waist measured where the chain will hang.
- Does Chanel publish a belt size chart?
- Not on the product pages read for this guide. Chanel's US pages for its calfskin belts give a name, a material line such as Calfskin & Gold-Tone Metal, the colour and a reference number, and route the piece to boutiques rather than printing a size ladder, a width or buckle dimensions. The size figures in circulation come from tags, resale measurements and owners' notes, which is why this page prints each one with where it was read.
