When you look at a shoe in a catalog, the upper material gets most of the attention. But the method used to attach the sole to the upper is what determines whether the shoe can be resoled, how water-resistant it is, and how many years it will realistically last. This guide explains the four main construction methods and what each one means for buyers.
Cemented (Glued) Construction
The most common method for casual and fashion shoes. The sole is bonded to the upper with industrial adhesive, with no stitching.
Advantages: Lightweight, flexible, and inexpensive to produce. Most sneakers and fashion shoes use this method.
Disadvantages: Cannot be resoled — when the sole wears out, the shoe is done. The bond can separate over time, especially in humid climates or with frequent water exposure.
What to ask: Whether the adhesive is polyurethane-based (stronger and more water-resistant) or latex-based (cheaper, less durable). Also ask whether the sole has been pre-heated and pressed, which improves adhesion.
Blake Stitch Construction
A single stitch runs through the insole, the upper, and the outsole, connecting them directly. This method is common in Italian dress shoes.
Advantages: Slim profile and elegant look — the sole is thin and close to the foot. More flexible than welted construction. Can be resoled, though it requires a Blake-stitch machine.
Disadvantages: The stitch penetrates all layers, so water can seep through the holes in wet conditions. Less durable than Goodyear welt for heavy wear.
What to ask: How many stitches per inch (higher density means better durability), and whether a midsole layer is added between the insole and outsole for extra water resistance.
Goodyear Welt Construction
Considered the gold standard for durable dress shoes. A strip of leather (the welt) is stitched to the upper and the insole, then a second stitch attaches the outsole to the welt. The welt creates a gap between the sole and the foot, adding cushioning and water resistance.
Advantages: Can be resoled repeatedly — a well-made Goodyear-welted shoe can last decades with proper care. The welt layer adds structure and weather protection. The cork filling between insole and outsole molds to the foot over time.
Disadvantages: Heavier and bulkier than Blake or cemented. Higher cost due to the labor-intensive process. Break-in period is longer because of the stiff initial structure.
What to ask: Whether the welt is genuine leather or synthetic (leather is traditional and molds better). Whether cork is used as the filling material. Whether the shoe has a storm welt (a raised lip that adds extra water resistance) or a flat welt.
Injection-Molded Construction
Molten rubber or PU is injected directly into a mold around the upper, bonding as it cools. This method is common in performance footwear and waterproof boots.
Advantages: Creates a seamless, waterproof bond. Very durable for active use. Lightweight compared to welted construction.
Disadvantages: Cannot be resoled. Once the sole wears through, the shoe is finished. The bond can fail if the upper surface is not properly prepared during manufacturing.
What to ask: What material is injected (PU is lighter and more flexible; rubber is heavier but more abrasion-resistant), and whether the shoe has been tested for waterproof rating (IPX standards).

How to Check Construction from Catalog Photos
You can often identify the construction method from product photos:
- Visible stitching on the sole edge → Likely Blake or Goodyear welt
- A raised lip between upper and sole → Goodyear storm welt
- Smooth, seamless sole attachment → Cemented or injection-molded
- Thick, visible sole layer → Likely injection-molded rubber
Ask the seller to confirm the construction method before ordering. A shoe advertised as “handmade leather” might still be cemented — the construction method, not just the upper material, determines long-term value.
