Valentino Shoe Sizing: The Millimetres in the Style Name, the Seventeen Numbers on the Box, and the Two Ladders That Share a Label

Valentino shoe sizing in figures: heel heights of 5 to 145 mm in the style name, an Italian ladder of 34 to 42 in half steps, and two ladders sharing one label.

Valentino sizes its shoes on the Italian scale, so the number on the box runs 34 to 42 in half steps for women and 38 to 48 for men, and the millimetre figure inside the style name is the heel and not the fit: the house's own pages list Rockstud and VLogo shoes at 5, 20, 60, 65, 80, 85, 90, 100, 105, 115, 125 and 145 mm in the same season. The two published foot-length ladders do not agree at the same label either. A women's IT 39 is printed against a 25.3 cm foot and reads US 9 and UK 6, while a men's IT 39 is printed against 25.0 cm and reads US 6 and UK 5, so the label alone does not tell you which ladder you are on.

Valentino builds its shoes on the Italian scale, so the number on the box runs 34 to 42 in half steps for women and 38 to 48 for men, while the millimetre figure inside the style name is the heel and not the fit — the house’s own listings carry 5, 20, 60, 65, 80, 85, 90, 100, 105, 115, 125 and 145 mm in the same season.

What the millimetres inside a style name measure

The number in the name is a specification, and on this house it is the one that gets published most consistently. A single category page for women’s sandals lists the same family at four heights at once, and the heels and pumps page adds a further set, so the figures below are all taken from the names the house gives its own products rather than from a photograph taken from the side.

Two habits come out of that table. The first is that the height is stable while the upper changes: the 65 mm figure is published on two different Rockstud pumps, and the 100 mm figure on a pump, a caged ankle-strap pump, a grainy leather ankle-strap pump, a lace pump with straps and a sandal, so the millimetre number is a better identifier than the style family on its own. The second is that a platform style carries two numbers, and they belong together. The VLogo Signature platform sandal is published as 115 mm or 4.5 in with a 35 mm or 1.4 in platform, and the difference between those figures, 80 mm, is the drop the foot is carried at rather than the overall height of the shoe. A buyer comparing a 115 mm platform sandal with an 80 mm slingback is comparing two styles that put the foot at the same angle, while one of them stands 35 mm taller.

The same heel printed as two different inch values

The millimetre figure is the one worth quoting, because the inch conversion beside it is not consistent across the house’s own regional pages. The 65 mm Rockstud pump with straps in pony-effect calfskin is printed as 65 mm / 2.6 in on the British and Slovenian pages while five other 65 mm styles, including the crystal and micro-stud pump and the patent pump with matching straps, are printed as 65 mm / 2.5 in elsewhere. The 80 mm VLogo Signature slingback collects three conversions of the same metric: 3.1 in on one page, 3.15 in on two others, and a page whose title carries the figure twice as 80 mm / 3.15 in. The flat ballerina is printed at 5 mm / 0.25 in on three regional pages and at 5 mm / 0.2 in on the Mary-Jane ballerina in moiré. The 20 mm men’s loafer is printed as 0.8 in.

None of those disagreements changes the shoe, and none of them should be averaged. They matter because the inch line is what most search results carry, and a buyer checking a listing against the house’s page can end up convinced she is looking at two different products. The habit that avoids it is to quote the metric figure and the style name together, and to treat any inch value as an approximation the page has rounded its own way.

Seventeen numbers for women, printed in the selector

The women’s ladder exists as seventeen numbers rather than as a set of whole sizes, and the house prints the run in the selector on each product page. On the 65 mm patent Rockstud pump with matching straps and studs the selector reads 34, 34.5, 35, 35.5, 36, 36.5, 37, 37.5, 38, 38.5, 39, 39.5, 40, 40.5, 41, 41.5 and 42. The same half step appears in the conversion tables retailers publish for the label, where the ladder is paired with the American, British, French and German numbers it converts to: IT 34 reads US 4 and UK 1, the middle of the ladder at IT 38 reads US 8 and UK 5, and IT 42 reads US 12 and UK 9. A large American chain store’s own product page for a Rockstud slide takes the same run and pairs it one step at a time, from 5 US and 35 EU through 6 US and 36 EU to 11 US and 41 EU.

Half steps that measure 0.3, 0.3 and 0.4 centimetres

The centimetre column attached to the women’s ladder is worth reading closely, because it explains how much shoe a half step actually buys. From 22.0 cm at IT 34 the ladder moves up in increments of 0.3 cm, 0.3 cm and then 0.4 cm, and that pattern repeats all the way to 27.3 cm at IT 42 rather than settling into one even step. The whole ladder therefore spans 5.3 cm across seventeen numbers, which is an average of about 3.3 mm per step, and no single step is larger than 4 mm. A buyer who is told to go half a size up is being asked to find about three millimetres of length, which is a change the foot notices in a pointed toe and barely notices in a sandal with an adjustable ankle strap.

The same pattern repeats on the men’s ladder, which is why a man moving half a size also moves about three millimetres rather than five. It also explains the one place the published tables look inconsistent: where a listing prints a millimetre figure in brackets beside the European number, that figure is the Japanese or Mondopoint size rather than the foot length, so a men’s EU 39.5 listed as 245 mm sits about eight millimetres below the 25.3 cm the foot-length column prints for the same row. Both numbers are correct readings of their own column, and only one of them is a foot.

Where the men’s ladder stops halving

The men’s ladder runs from IT 38 to IT 48, and its half steps stop before the ladder does. Foot lengths are printed from 24.3 cm at IT 38 in the same 0.3, 0.3 and 0.4 cm pattern through 25.0 cm at IT 39 and 27.0 cm at IT 42, up to 29.3 cm at IT 45.5. After that the published rows are 46 at 29.6 cm, 47 at 30.3 cm and 48 at 31.0 cm, so the half step is gone above 45.5 and the last two steps measure about seven millimetres each. A man who wears half sizes in the middle of the range and needs the largest end of it is therefore choosing between three whole numbers, and the seven-millimetre gap between them is more than twice the size of the half steps he is used to.

One printed 39, two different feet

Between IT 38 and IT 42 the two ladders carry the same labels and mean different feet, and the published columns show it at 39. On the women’s table IT 39 is printed against UK 6, US 9 and a foot length of 25.3 cm. On the men’s table the same number is printed against UK 5, US 6 and 25.0 cm. The foot lengths are three millimetres apart, which is a rounding difference, but the British and American columns are three sizes apart, which is not. Two of the shops that publish the label’s own conversion tables agree on this split, and a third, a luxury department store, agrees as well: the women’s line reads IT 39 with US 9 and the men’s line reads IT 39 with US 6. A large American chain store’s combined selector on a Rockstud slide points the same way, since it pairs US 5 with EU 35 at the bottom of the run and US 11 with EU 41 at the top.

The overlap is also where listings get confusing, because a photograph does not carry a scale. A pointed-toe pump in an IT 39 and a low-top sneaker in the same IT 39 sit on different ladders, and the label on the box reads the same. What separates them in print is the code, and what separates them in a conversation is naming the ladder you are shopping on.

The last three characters of a code are a colour

The house prints two codes on each product page, a long product code and a shorter retail SKU, and the difference between them is a season digit and a collection figure rather than a style change. The patent caged pump in poudre appears as the product code 7W2S0393VNW_P45 and the SKU WS0393VNW_P45. The tail after the underscore is the colour, and it is written in a mix of letters and digits: P45 is poudre, 0NO is black on a pump and on a men’s loafer, N91 is black with poudre, W16 is red, J8M is the colour the house calls insolent, GF9 is rose cannelle, 39K is grey, KUN is gold, ZRM is silver with crystal, and IA5 is light ivory with crystal.

N91black and poudre
W16red

IA5light ivory and crystal

The second character of the code is the other useful figure, because it says which last the pair was cut on: a W marks the women’s ladder and a Y the men’s. The women’s caged pump is coded 7W2S0393VNW_P45 and the men’s VLogo Signature loafers are coded 8Y0S0N03ZWD_0NO and 8Y2S0830BLU_M15, which is what makes the code a better identifier than a photograph of a black shoe. A buyer who sends the code and the colour tail is describing one pair out of a range in which the same shape appears in several heights, several uppers and both ladders.

What the house prints about fit, and what a retailer adds

Valentino’s product pages carry the materials, the heel figure, the country of manufacture and the code, and they do not carry a fit instruction. The only guidance about feet on the house’s own size-guide page is procedural: place the foot on paper, mark the tip of the longest toe and the back of the heel, measure both feet, and if they differ, choose the number that matches the longer one. There is no sentence on any of the shoe pages telling a buyer to size up or down, which is worth knowing before a listing is read as though the brand had said something.

The fit flags in circulation come from retailers, and they cluster on the structured, pointed styles. A large American department store prints runs small, order half a size up, alongside a note that the item is sized according to Italian sizes, on both the Rockstud ankle strap pump and the Rockstud strappy pointed toe pump. An Italian multi-brand retailer generalises the same advice into a tip on its size guide, recommending a size up when a shoe is structured or pointed and the buyer sits between two numbers. Set against the three-millimetre half step, that advice means going half a size up is the cheap version of the decision, since the alternative is a pair that is a full step out.

Why a 100 mm pump and a flat slide answer the same question differently

The same three millimetres of foot length land very differently depending on the shoe they are asked to fit into, and the published construction explains why. A slide sandal with a 5 mm heel has an open toe and an open back, so the foot can sit forward or back inside the footbed and the ankle strap takes up the difference; a 60 mm sandal with adjustable straps behaves the same way. A 100 mm pump with a pointed toe has none of that slack: the upper is closed, the toe box is fixed, and the heel angle sends the foot forward into the point, where the only adjustment is the small amount of give in the leather. That is the style the retailers flag as running small, and it is the style where the ladder’s three-millimetre half step becomes the difference between a pair that closes and a pair that does not.

The other figure to bring into the decision is the platform, because it changes the drop without changing the name. On the 115 mm platform sandal with a 35 mm platform the house publishes both numbers, and the arithmetic of the two gives an 80 mm drop, which is the same angle as the 80 mm slingback the same season prints on a much lower shoe. A buyer who has worn the slingback comfortably has a reference for the platform sandal’s angle even though the printed heights look 35 mm apart, and a buyer who reads only the taller figure will expect a shoe that leans further than it does.

What a photograph settles, and the number it cannot

A photograph of a Valentino shoe is a good record of shape and a poor record of height. What a plain side view settles is the silhouette and the closure: a pointed toe against a round one, a slingback strap against a closed heel, a cage of straps against a solid upper, a stiletto against a block, a studded strap against a V-shaped metal logo, and whether the sole is flat or carries a visible platform. A view from slightly below shows how thick that platform is relative to the sole, which is the one part of a platform style a side view can be argued from at a push.

What no exterior photograph carries is any of the figures this page is built on. A heel height cannot be read off an angle without a ruler in the frame, the foot length behind a label is invisible, and the ladder the pair belongs to is printed on the box rather than on the shoe. The frames to ask for are the size stamp on the sole or the inside of the heel, the box label with the number and the ladder it sits on, and, for a platform style, a photograph that includes a tape measure against the heel. Those three turn a size conversation into a decision, and a clean set of product angles without them does not.

What to send with a Valentino size question

The code with its colour tail, because it identifies the height and the colour in one string and settles which ladder the pair was cut on. The metric heel figure from the style name, rather than the inch figure beside it, since the same metric is printed with two different inch values on the house’s own pages. The length of the longer foot in centimetres, taken with the foot on paper and the heel against a wall, because that is the column the ladder is built from. The label number and whether it came from a women’s or a men’s table, since IT 39 is US 9 on one and US 6 on the other. And one side photograph of the pair, which fixes the silhouette and the closure while the numbers fix everything else.

Browse the shoes catalog or send those five figures on WhatsApp. For the same exercise at other houses, the Miu Miu shoe sizing guide works through a three-millimetre half step on an Italian ladder, the Hermès sandal size guide reads three sandals against one printed sentence, the Dior J’Adior heels guide compares three heel heights with a fixed ribbon strap, the Gucci loafer size guide follows one loafer across a British and an Italian ladder, and the regional shoe size conversion guide covers the European, British and American columns these charts are built from.

  • A luxury marketplace’s listing for a Valentino Garavani Rockstud heel, whose selector runs from IT 36 to IT 41 in half steps, corroborating the women’s run above 34
  • A multi-brand retailer’s listing for a men’s Valentino Garavani sneaker: sizes printed as EU 39.5 (245 MM), EU 40 (250 MM) and continuing in five-millimetre steps, where the figure in brackets is the Mondopoint number rather than the foot length

Frequently asked questions about Valentino shoe sizing

Is Valentino shoe sizing Italian or European?
The number on the box is the Italian size, and for these shoes it is the same number the European charts print, which is why a listing can show one figure as IT and EU at once. The women's ladder runs 34 to 42 in half steps, the men's runs 38 to 48, and the house states on its own size guide that the sizes shown on a product page correspond to the size on the label, with the site then converting that label into whatever system the visitor's country uses. That conversion is where the trouble starts: the same Italian label converts to US 9 on the women's table and US 6 on the men's table, so a buyer who is converting a number rather than reading a chart can land three American sizes away from the pair they meant.
Do Valentino shoes run small?
The house itself prints no fit sentence on its product pages, so the answer comes from the two figures it does publish and from what retailers put beside them. The centimetre ladder shows a half step worth about three millimetres of foot length, so half a size up is a smaller move than it sounds. Where a retailer does print a fit flag, it points at the structured, pointed styles: one large American retailer marks the Rockstud ankle strap pump and the Rockstud strappy pointed toe pump with a note that the style runs small and that the buyer should order half a size up, adding that the shoes are sized according to Italian sizes. An Italian multi-brand retailer puts the same logic as a general tip, advising a size up when the shoe is structured or pointed and the buyer sits between two numbers.
What does the number in a Valentino style name mean?
It is the heel height in millimetres, and the house treats it as part of the product name rather than as a detail: the same season lists Rockstud Kidskin Pumps 100Mm, Rockstud Ankle Strap Sandal 90 Mm, Rockstud Calfskin Ankle Strap Sandal 60 Mm, Rockstud Slide Sandal In Suede 05Mm, VLogo Signature Slingback Pump 80Mm and Crasher Platform Pumps In Kidskin 145Mm as separate styles. On a platform style the house publishes two figures instead of one, so the VLogo Signature platform sandal is listed at 115 mm or 4.5 in with a 35 mm or 1.4 in platform, and the difference between the two numbers is the drop the foot is actually carried at. Because the same upper can carry two heights, two pumps that look identical in a photograph can sit 35 mm apart under the heel.
Does Valentino make half sizes in its shoes?
Yes, on the women's ladder, and it prints them in the size selector of the product page rather than in the general chart. The 65 mm patent Rockstud pump with matching straps lists 34, 34.5, 35, 35.5 and continues in the same half step to 42, and a large American chain store's page for a Rockstud slide pairs its American and European numbers in the same half step from 5 US and 35 EU to 11 US and 41 EU. The men's ladder prints half steps too, but it stops halving above 45.5: after 45.5 the published rows go 46, 47 and 48 with no half step, and the last two steps widen to about seven millimetres.
How many millimetres apart are two Valentino half sizes?
About three. The house's foot-length ladder for women opens at IT 34 with 22.0 cm and closes at IT 42 with 27.3 cm, and the steps between the seventeen numbers run 0.3 cm, 0.3 cm, then 0.4 cm, repeating that pattern down the whole ladder rather than holding one even increment. The men's ladder behaves the same way from 24.3 cm at IT 38 to 31.0 cm at IT 48. The practical consequence is that going half a size up buys roughly three millimetres of length in the women's range, and that the occasional four-millimetre step is the one buyers notice as a tighter or looser pair when two adjacent numbers from different production runs are compared.
How do I tell a women's pair from a men's pair when both are labelled 39?
Read the product code and the converted columns together. The code carries the last in its second character, with W for the women's ladder and Y for the men's, so a women's Rockstud caged pump is coded 7W2S0393VNW_P45 while a men's VLogo Signature loafer in the same collection is coded 8Y0S0N03ZWD_0NO. The converted columns separate them even further: the women's table prints IT 39 against UK 6, US 9 and a 25.3 cm foot length, and the men's table prints the same labelled 39 against UK 5, US 6 and 25.0 cm. The two ladders overlap between 38 and 42, so on a listing that shows only the number and a photograph the code is what settles it.
