Men's shoes are UK sizes; women's are Italian
Gucci's men's shoe chart is keyed on the UK/AU column, which is why a men's Gucci 8 reads as a UK 8 rather than an Italian 42 first: the IT/EU 42 appears beside it as a translation, followed by a US 8.5 and a JP 27. The women's chart is keyed the other way round, on the Italian number, and runs from IT 34 to IT 42 with separate EU, UK, French, US and JP columns — women's IT 38 is a UK 5, a US 8, a JP 25 and a 9.72 inch foot. Both charts print the same row structure but not the same anchor, so the answer to "what is a Gucci 8?" depends entirely on which chart is being read.
What a Gucci 8 actually measures
On the men's chart a Gucci 8 is a UK 8, an IT/EU 42, a US 8.5, a JP 27 and a published foot length of 10.75 inches, which converts to 27.3 cm. On the women's chart the numeral 8 is a US size rather than a Gucci size: a women's US 8 is an IT 38 with a 9.72 inch (24.7 cm) foot — roughly 2.6 cm shorter than the men's 8. The row above and below on the men's chart step about 0.27 inches each, and the women's chart steps about 0.28 inches, so within each chart the ladder is regular; it is only between the two charts that the same numeral jumps.
The fit line changes per model
Gucci prints a fit sentence on some product pages and nothing on others, and the sentences run in opposite directions. The Princetown slipper says the shoes run small and recommends sizing up half a size. The Ragazzo loafer says the style runs large and recommends selecting at least one size down. The Horsebit 1953 loafer and the Jordaan print no fit sentence at all — only build details, a leather sole and a flat 0.5 inch height on the 1953, and Blake construction on the Jordaan. Independent retailer notes agree with Gucci where Gucci speaks and add that the Ace, Rhyton and Tennis 1977 lines run large. There is no house-wide answer, and the model name on the listing is what decides.
Sizing from a foot length, not a label
Measure the foot heel to longest toe against a wall in the afternoon and write the centimetre figure down. On the men's chart that figure lands as follows: 25.5 cm is a Gucci 6, 26.2 cm is a Gucci 7, 27.3 cm is a Gucci 8 and 28.0 cm is a Gucci 9. On the women's chart a 24.0 cm foot is an IT 37, a 24.7 cm foot is an IT 38 and a 25.4 cm foot is an IT 39. Because the two charts are anchored differently, converting a US label across from another brand is the least reliable route; the centimetre column is the only field both charts publish in the same terms.
